Shrunken Leather Care

What is Leather Shrinkage?

Leather Shrinkage occurs when your leather product loses it’s natural moisture. Not to worry as leather shrinkage can be fixed.

Why Does this Happen?

Leather fibres:

• contract when they lose moisture

• regain length when they gain moisture

This is a natural feature caused by sun, wind rain etc. and can be exaggerated by more extreme environmental conditions.

For Example: left in the back of an enclosed car on a hot day.

Remember:

Protect your hat from extreme heat (i.e. back of a car). Re-condition your hat regularly with Barmah Leather Conditioner.

How Can I Fix It? (Leather)

All leather products need leather conditioner. Apply regularly to help maintain natural moisture contents.

To get moisture back into the leather:

1. Soak the hat in water

2. When leather fibres are saturated, re-stretch the leather fibres to their natural length so the brim of the hat sits flat again.

3. Allow to slowly dry over an upturned bowl so the hat maintains it shape.

4. When dry, apply Leather Conditioner to replace the natural oils. We recommend Barmah Leather Conditioner to replace the natural oils.

How can I fix it? (Suede)

  1. Suede and water don’t mix!

  2. Apply leather conditioner to the underside of the hat brim.

The mossed underside will absorb the conditioner where as only suede specific conditioners can be used on suede.
