Caring for Suede Leather Hats

Barmah Hats are sturdy and durable. With a small amount of care your Barmah Hat will give you many years of service. To care for your Barmah Hat we recommend the following:

Suede Leather Care Guide

  • We recommend that you clean your suede hat weekly. This will ensure dirt does not build up and your hat stays in great shape!

  • Using a suede brush on your hat is essential. Using this brush weekly will help remove dirt and avoid matting of the suede nap.

Oily Stains on Suede Leather

  • Oily stains on suede leather can be removed with talcum powder or cornstarch.  Apply the powder and allow it to sit for a couple hours. Brush the powder away once the stain has been absorbed. This does not work with sweat stains.

  • You can also try using a suede eraser bar to remove dry stains. These are sold in ‘Suede and Nubuck’ cleaning kits, alongside soft bristle brushes. Follow the recommended use instructions that come with your Suede Eraser.

Suede and Liquids Don’t Mix

Avoid getting your suede hat wet as the suede could shrink or lose its shape. The exception to this rule is when you’re cleaning your hat. If your hat does get wet shake off the excess liquid and let your hat dry before wearing it again.

There are a number of suede and nubuck waterproofing sprays on the market that could help protect your hat. Follow the instructions on the waterproofing product and ensure it is specifically made to be used on suede before use. Always test a small area before applying to the whole hat.

Shrunken Suede Leather

We recommend using leather conditioner on the underside of your suede hat. Apply leather conditioner to the mossed underside of the brim. Mossed leather will absorb the conditioner easily, avoid using generic leather conditioners on the suede/nubuck side of the hat as it can alter the appearance of the finish.

You can use most leather conditioner on the underside of your suede hat. We recommend the Barmah Hats leather conditioner which you can find for sale here. Barmah Hats Leather Conditioner

Do not use normal leather conditioner on the suede (top) side of your hat. Only suede specific products should be applied to the suede on your hat.

Suede/nubuck specific conditioners are formulated to be used on suede - follow the instructions on your suede conditioner on the best way to hydrate your suede hat.

Matted Suede Fibers

For matted fibres or caked on dirt and grime, we recommend using an emery cloth to buff and raise the suede fibres.

Emery cloths are a coarse fabric material and can be substituted with a low-grit sandpaper (120 grit is usually good).

Stubborn Stains and Sweat Stains

  • Stubborn stains and stains from sweat should be spot cleaned with a mild detergent and water.

  • We recommend mixing baby shampoo with warm water (ratio of 1:15). Lightly scrub the area with a suede brush. Rinse the area with a damp cloth and allow the hat to air dry flat.

  • Once dry we recommended brushing your hat with a suede brush to retain the suede nap. Ensure that you wait until your hat is completely dry before wearing or storing it.
